WriteToLearnNY Hybrid Workshop Series

 

 

This series of four, 2-hour on-site workshops combined with an asynchronous online component prepares high school educators of all disciplines to implement writing-to-learn in their classes.  Offered at three to four week intervals, each multi-dimensional, face-to-face workshop is meant to enhance and reinforce the teaching practices of participants.  Activities include whole group discussions, writing exercises, small group work, mini-lectures, and responses to assigned  readings.  Workshops are delivered on-site (school, teacher center, or district office) and are limited to 10 participants.  Each educator who completes all four workshops as well as all required readings and written assignments earns 45 CTLE hours.  These hours account for attendance at workshops as well as the work in support of them: completing workshop readings and writing assignments, and participating in asynchronous online discussion boards. 

 

On-site Workshop Content

 

Workshop 1: Introduction to the WriteToLearnNY Workshop Series

Workshop 2: Designing Writing Assignments

  • integrating course learning objectives with writing assignments

  • kinds of writing and associated assignments

  • characteristics of effective writing assignments

  • scaffolding writing assignments

 

Workshop 3: Responding to Student Writing

  • exploring types of rubrics

  • rubric criteria and descriptors

  • responding to the writing of ELL students

 

Workshop 4: Reflection Assignments and Future Directions

  • minimal marking strategies

  • designing reflection assignments

  • evaluating student writing

  • WriteToLearnNY Hybrid Workshop Series review

 

 

Off-site Workshop Activities (approximately 8 hours per workshop, plus 5 additional hours for term project: planning and reflection letters)

  • Close-reading of articles: Participants read pertinent texts for discussion.

  • Creating original texts: Participants produce appropriate texts to share with colleagues.  These include both responses to readings and drafts of writing assignments intended for their students.

  • Contributing to online discussion boards: Participants post, comment on, and respond to assigned readings and writing assignments they have created. 

  • Term project: planning and reflection letters

 

Fees and Cancellation Policy

Fees

The fee for the WriteToLearnNY Hybrid Workshop Series is $5,000,* and the program is capped at 10 participants.  Payment in full is due before the start of the program.

 

 

Cancellation and Refunds

Cancellation of the WriteToLearnNY Hybrid Workshop Series up to two weeks prior to the scheduled date of the first meeting will not carry any financial penalty and any monies previously paid will be refunded in full.  Cancellation within two weeks of the scheduled date of the first workshop will incur a processing fee of $250.  No additional cancellation fees apply.

 

All cancellation and refund requests must be made via email to WriteToLearnNY@gmail.com.  

 

Cancellation by the instructor will be rescheduled at no charge.
